Learning
(Psycho-Educational)
Assessments

Psychological-Educational Assessments are used to help identify and understand any learning difficulties a child (or, in some cases, an older learner) may be experiencing at school.

Psycho-Educational Assessments (sometimes simply referred to as Learning Assessments) include an assessment of Intellectual Functioning and Academic Achievement, which can uncover Specific Learning Disorders if present (often referred to as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia).

If you have noticed your child is ‘falling behind’ at school, or if you are worried about a particular area of their development such as their reading or writing, this assessment can identify what may be the cause, and if a learning disorder is identified it may assist your child to receive additional support in the classroom

Learning Assessments usually involve:

Initial Interview with Parent/Caregiver

Approx. 1 Hour
In-Clinic or via Telehealth

Testing Session

2.5 Hours
Face-to-face, in-clinic.

Report with Outcomes and Recommendations

The preparation and provision of a thorough report, with outcomes and recommendations. Preparation of the report usually takes 1-2 weeks, and is provided at the conclusion of  the Feedback Session.

ADHD Assessments

ADHD Assessments are used to identify whether a person’s differences with their attention regulation, emotion regulation, and executive functioning skills may be due to ADHD, and to provide understanding on the most suitable strategies for the future.

These assessments are helpful for children and adults to understand the way that their brain works and may be helpful for students seeking adjustments within the learning environment at school or university.

Emma is able to facilitate ADHD Assessments for both children and adults, with only a slight difference in the overall process, and reports tailored to meet the needs of each.

Psychologists cannot prescribe medication for ADHD, but the report included within this assessment can be provided to a paediatrician or psychiatrist for consideration of treatment options.

ADHD Assessments usually involve:

Intellectual Functioning (IQ) Assessments

Intellectual Functioning (more commonly known as IQ) Assessments are used to learn about a person’s cognitive profile, their strengths and challenges across the areas of working memory, reasoning ability, verbal comprehension and processing speed.

IQ Assessments can be used in addition to other measures, to diagnose Intellectual Disability or Giftedness. An IQ assessment helps to establish an understanding of the way in which an individual’s brain operates when presented with different tasks or situations that require a certain type of thinking.

Autism Assessments

Autism Assessments are used to identify whether a person’s differences in social communication, sensory preferences, and usual behaviours are related to Autism.
Emma provides assessments that are neuro-affirming, meaning that a person’s unique strengths and challenges attributed to their neurotype are not viewed as something ‘wrong’ with a person that needs to be ‘fixed’. Rather, we understand that everyone’s brain is wired in a certain way, and it can be helpful to understand this to assist with supports in areas that are showing up as tricky in a person’s life. In this way, diagnosis and recommendations for support are made to help a person navigate the challenges that their environment presents them with.

Emma is a Clinical Psychologist, which means that the NDIS accepts her diagnostic reports as a ‘sole-assessor’ – with Emma’s assessment there is no need for a second assessment to occur by another diagnostician (for example by a Speech Pathologist or a Paediatrician).

Once the assessment with Emma is complete, if you/your child being assessed meets the diagnostic criteria for Autism, a formal diagnosis will be provided within a report, and if desired, this can be used to apply for NDIS funding.

Initial Interview Sessions

An initial interview session covers all of the relevant information regarding a person’s history that has lead them to the current assessment. This allows for a comprehensive assessment that considers all of the factors that may be contributing to a person’s strengths and challenges in their life. For children and adolescents, the initial interview session will involve a parent/caregiver.

Assessment Session

During this session Emma utilises a combination of up-to-date formalised assessment tools to gather specific information relevant to Autism. For younger children this session is completed with a parent/caregiver present.

Feedback Session

During the Feedback Session, Emma will provide the outcome of the assessment, explain any relevant diagnoses, and discuss recommendations for what comes next.

Report with Diagnostic Outcomes and Recommendations

The report is provided during the Feedback Session, and where a relevant diagnosis is given, the report is able to be provided directly to the NDIS as part of an application for funding.

Tailoring Assessments for the Individual

Each assessment, or suite of assesments is tailored to meet the needs of the individual.

Following an initial phone call to determine which assessment(s) are best suited to you or your child, Emma’s first action is to email you a step-by-step plan detailing the assessment process and any associated fees, and to provide an overview of how they are designed to help.

Emma will work alongside parents, caregivers, children and families, curating and conducting the assessments that will best assist all parties – while communicating openly each step of the way.

Emma’s specialisation as a Clinical Psychologist allows her to formulate complementary suites of assessments that work together to provide clear and accurate advice and recommendations for each individual client and their specific situation.
